iPhone Gestures For iPhones Without Home Buttons, Like the iPhone X

Does your new iPhone not have a Home button? Are you struggling to figure out how to do some tasks that used to be done using the Home button? Have you discovered that you can no longer turn off your iPhone by pressing and holding the button on the side and then swiping your finger across the screen? Here’s are some fundamental finger gestures that you need to know to get accustomed to using your new iPhone.

How to wake up and unlock your iPhone

There are multiple ways to wake up an iPhone. You could press the Sleep/Wake button, this is the silver button on the right-hand side of the iPhone. Alternatively, you could tap the screen.

Once it’s awake then you’ll need to initiate the unlock process by swiping your finger upwards about an inch, starting at the bottom edge of the iPhone’s screen. (You do lock your iPhone so it can’t be accessed by strangers, don’t you?) You could then type in your passcode to unlock it. Or, if you have setup FaceID, you could simply look at the phone’s screen and wait a split second.

How to stop using an app and return to the Home screen

On iPhones with Home buttons, you used to simply press the Home button once. Now, you need to swipe your finger upwards, about an inch, starting at the bottom edge of the iPhone’s screen. When you do it properly, the app that you’re using will vanish and you’ll see rows and columns of app icons on your Home screen.

How to switch between apps

On iPhones with Home buttons, you used to press the Home button twice. Then you’d see a view displaying a stack of the apps that are open. Now, you need to swipe your finger upwards, about an inch, starting at the bottom edge of the screen. However, rather than swiping straight up, you need to swipe in an arcing motion, up and to the right. You’ll then be able to swipe from left to right to browse through the stack of recently used apps. Tap on the app that you want to use.

How to close one or more apps

Follow the instructions listed above for switching between apps. However, when you’re swiping from left to right to flip through the stack of recently used apps, you can swipe up, from the middle of the screen to close an app.

How to turn off your iPhone

On iPhone’s with Home buttons, you used to press and hold the Sleep/Wake button which was either on the top or the right-hand side of the phone. Now, you need to simultaneously depress the Volume Down button and the Sleep/Wake button. After simultaneously holding these two buttons for a couple of seconds, you’ll see a few options appear on the screen. Slide your finger across the button labeled slide to power off.
