Do you use Dropbox? If you ever change the user account name on your Mac then Dropbox will break and will display a fairly cryptic error message. Here are instructions on how to fix Dropbox.
- Click the Dropbox icon that appears in your Mac’s menubar, click the gear icon and then select Quit Dropbox
- Open Terminal and type in the following command. It will rename the Dropbox meta folder: mv ~/.dropbox ~/dropbox.old
- Drag this now visible dropbox.old folder from the top of your Home folder to the Trash
- Click on the Finder icon on the Dock
- Click on the Go menu and select Go To Folder.
- Type in /Library/
- Drag the DropboxHelperTools folder to the Trash and enter your Administrator password if prompted to complete this action.
- Empty the Trash
- Download and install the most current version of Dropbox.
- The Dropbox application should open and ask you to sign-in to your Dropbox account.
Worked like a charm! Thank you very much!
Worked fine for me. Thanks!
Maurizio.
Legend! This actually helped, after getting stuck with a not-so-helpful Dropbox window, when renaming my home folder, many thanks!
Worked for me very well. So fast, straightforward, and simple. Before stumbling upon your solution, I was fighting this problem for 2 whole days. Tried to get in touch with Dropbox support, sent a bunch of LOG files, they entered remotely into my Mac to troubleshoot, ran scripts. Nothing. Your solution was the best. THANK YOU!
Anastasio and Kostadin,
I’m glad my instructions worked for you. The instructions were given to me from Dropbox support many years ago when I first encountered this problem. I’m sorry the Dropbox support person you spoke with recently wasn’t able to find this information in Dropbox’s own records.
